Founded
in 1886, the City of Lamar is located on the sprawling southeastern plains
of Colorado. With a population of just more than 9,000, Lamar offers the
quaint setting of one of the Wests more accessible small towns,
adjacent to the amenities of a large city. Lamar is located at the intersection
of three national highways (US-50, US-287, US-385), served by one major
bus line, major railway passenger service, and is a hub of modern farming,
ranching, and manufacturing.
The city is home to many clubs, organizations, and activities, including
a prominent multimedia arts community. Nearby, John Martin Dam and Queens
Lakes offer water sports, hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreational
opportunities. Lamar city parks, picnic, swimming and tennis facilities,
and the public golf course are available to students. For those who seek
off-campus adventure, Colorado Springs and Denver provide an enjoyable
day trip or weekend excursion, in the shadow of the majestic Rocky Mountains.
