Primarily agriculture-based, Southeast Colorado presents its residents and visitors with the beauty of the high plains and the quality of life only small towns can provide. While Lamar Community College prides itself on its 'small campus atmosphere,' Southeast Colorado residents also care deeply about one another. Small town sports rivalries melt away when residents need assistance from each other. Southeast Colorado is a great place to live and flourish.
Great efforts are being made to diversify the region's economic base into more manufacturing, value-added ag industries, heritage tourism, and other logical extensions for the area. Because the region is located within the nation's Wind Corridor, the region is expanding its efforts to attract wind and other sustainable energy projects, suppliers and related industries.
Running from Mexico to Canada along Highway 287, the region also sits on the Ports-to-Plains Corridor. Lamar and Southeast Colorado are conveniently located for start-up and expansion of businesses locating on and serving the Corridor.
Founded in 1886, the City of Lamar is located on the sprawling southeastern plains of Colorado. With a population of just more than 9,000, Lamar offers the quaint setting of one of the West’s more accessible small towns, adjacent to the amenities of a large city. Lamar is located at the intersection of three national highways (US-50, US-287, US-385), served by one major bus line, major railway passenger service, and is a hub of modern farming, ranching, and manufacturing.
The city is home to many clubs, organizations, and activities, including a prominent multimedia arts community. Nearby, John Martin Dam and Queens Lakes offer water sports, hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Lamar city parks, picnic, swimming and tennis facilities, and the public golf course are available to students. For those who seek off-campus adventure, Colorado Springs and Denver provide an enjoyable day trip or weekend excursion, in the shadow of the majestic Rocky Mountains.
