Bringing History to Life - 1800 to 1890. See history come alive with
• Native Americans, early trappers, explorers
• Military topographical engineers
• Buffalo hunters
• Homesteaders, cowboys
• U.S. Cavalry, Infantry, & Artillery
• Confederate Cavalry & Infantry
• Gunfighters, gamblers, lawmen
• and Ranch life of the late 1800’s
presented by living historians, LCC students and staff, and area community members. Encampments are held on the Lamar Community College campus.
The Encampment illustrates what life was like on the Great Plains from 1800 - 1890, with attendees progressing through different periods in time. The event draws hundreds of attendees from Colorado and neighboring states. While the event appeals to the 'history buff,' it also awakens the 'buff' in everyone. Unlike static museum displays, attendees interact with living historians by asking questions, joining in activities, and listening to the historians' tales.

Field Trips: LCC offers the Encampment as a free field trip opportunity for K-12 students. Our event meets Colorado Model Content Standards and is a perfect complement for a variety of history curricula.
