Academic Support Services

At LCC, we care about the total education and well being of our students. We offer a wide variety of support programs to promote personal, academic and career development, with retention and graduation as the desired outcomes. Most services are provided through our Learning Support Services.

Basic Skills Assessment
Lamar Community College believes that students should have information about their level of basic academic skills. In compliance with Colorado State Statutes (C.R.S. 23-1-113.3) the college requires that new students demonstrate their basic skill proficiencies. First-time students who enroll in a degree program (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of General Studies, or Associate of Applied Science) must be assessed in mathematics, writing, and reading early in their attendance at the college. Other students who seek to enroll in college-level English or math courses are also subject to this assessment requirement.

Students whose assessment scores do not meet the minimum cutoff scores established by the Colorado Community College System are responsible for completing basic skills instruction during their first thirty (30) credit hours of attendance at the college.

In addition, first-time students who enroll in a certificate program must be assessed in mathematics, writing, and reading early in their attendance at the college. Certificate students whose assessment scores do not meet the minimum cutoff scores established by the Colorado Community College System will be advised of the need for remediation and encouraged to take advantage of remedial services available through the college.

Students may be exempt from the assessment requirement if one of these conditions is met.

Transfer credit: A student who has completed college-level English or math courses at another institution with a grade of "C" or better, and has an official transcript on file in the Office of Admissions & Records, may be exempt from part or all of the basic skills assessment.

ACT and SAT scores: A student who meets the minimum score requirements listed below, and has official score results on file in the office of the LCC Registrar, will be exempt from all or part of the basic skills assessment.

Cutoff scores:

  • Mathematics-ACT 19, SAT 460, Accuplacer 85
  • Writing-ACT 18, SAT 440, Accuplacer 95
  • Reading- ACT 17, SAT 430, Accuplacer 80

Students wishing to complete basic skills assessment prior to arrival at LCC should contact their local Colorado institution of higher education concerning assessment availability.
