Lamar
Community Colleges Horse Training and Management program facilities
include 70 indoor stalls. Colts are assigned to each student. Individual
students are responsible for the feeding and care of their horses. The
facilities also include outdoor runs for program horses.
Students
in the HTM program must furnish their own tack. A list of required items
can be found in more information section
of this Web site or it can be picked up when the student comes for a
required riding interview. Enrollment is limited to 50 students in the
HTM program, ensuring individualized instruction.
Two
large 150 foot by 300 foot outdoor arenas provide area for students to
work with their horses. Labs are divided between instructors to ensure
that students receive individualized instruction. With over 300 days
of sunshine students are able to ride outdoors most of the time
During inclement
weather, students use the 90 foot by 185 foot indoor arena. Students
specializing in cutting horse training also use this arena to train.
Forty-two stalls, an instructor office, a tack room, and restrooms are
also located in the indoor arena. Instructors demonstrate skills then
work with students to perfect their skills
Located
on over forty acres, Lamar Community College Horse Training and Management
facilities give students ample room to improve their riding skills. Additionally,
riding trails allow students to ride outside the arena to develop their green
broke horses.
Students begin with watching instructor demonstrations, then move
to ground work, advance to riding, and conclude their efforts at a
horse show held at the end of each fall and spring semester. At the
Spring Horse Show freshmen students compete for honors. The all-around
male and female students as well as the most improved students are
recognized with scholarships. The students present their horses in
a reining pattern.
Admission
to the HTM program is limited to fifty students each year and students
are encouraged to apply early. Students must be admitted to the college,
complete the HTM questionnaire, and take a riding
interview. Questions can be directed to JJ Rydberg jj.rydberg@lamarcc.edu or
Del Chase del.chase@lamarcc.edu
Facilities
abound at LCC. A large indoor arena complete with stalls, two large outdoor
arenas, seven round pens, block stall barn, outside riding trails and
a warm-up area provide for a great experience. Our students learn from
hands-on experience. The largest portion of a students time is
spent at the barn not in the classroom.
Lamar
Community Colleges Horse Training and Management Program accepts
approximately 80 two-year old colts each fall and spring for students
to green-break and for advanced training. These horses are received from
breeders from several states. Breeders must apply in order to get their
horses into the program. Students are assigned one or more horses for
which they are responsible for the feeding, care, and training.
