ESL, Basic Literacy & Adult Secondary Education
Adult Transition Services at Lamar Community College provides adult literacy, adult ESL (English as a Second Language), and GED General Education Development Tests (GED) preparation classes, free of charge. These classes are funded by the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA), administered through the Colorado Department of Education. Individuals who are at least 17 years old and are no longer enrolled in a high school are eligible to receive instruction in these classes, which are offered on convenient daytime and evening schedules. Call 719.336.6644 for more information.
Career Development Skills Preparation
Adult Transition Services at LCC also administers a Career Pathways curriculum of three alternating four-week modules—Personal & Career Development, Work Styles & Ethics, and Business & Workplace Basics—throughout the academic year, as well as a fourth module, the Career Pathways Capstone Module, which provides a bridge to enrollment and employment. The Career Pathways curriculum was developed by the Office of Adult Transition Services in partnership with the Prowers County Department of Social Services, and these classes are open to PCDSS clients, as well as to anyone in LCC's service area for a fee. All modules in the Career Pathways program at Lamar Community College include skill-building instruction on the WIN Career Readiness Courseware, aligned to WorkKeys. Lamar Community College is creating a waitlist for the program at this time.
For more information about WIN-WorkKeys at LCC, please call 719-336-6644.
GED Preparation Services
The Office of Adult Transition Services at Lamar Community College provides classes to prepare adult learners for the General Educational Development (GED) Exam. The first step is to contact the Chief GED Examiner at Lamar Community College, Amy Jaime, at 719-336-6644 or Amy.Jaime@lamarcc.edu, who also administers the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) for placement in free GED Prep classes, which are funded by a federal grant under the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (AEFLA). Classes meet three days per week for two hours each day, and there are morning and evening schedules. Instructors in the Office of Adult Transition Services are trained to assist non-traditional, adult students in acquiring the high-school equivalency skills that are required to pass the GED exam and earn a GED diploma.
The GED Exam is administered on scheduled days and times each month, and the cost of the exam is $150, payable to Lamar Community College. Persons interested in taking the GED exam are encouraged to contact Amy Jaime, Chief GED Examiner at the Lamar Community College site, at 719-336-6644 or Amy.Jaime@lamarcc.edu to arrange an appointment. Lamar Community College offers the GED Exam in Spanish as well.
Intensive GED Prep Program
Under the supervision of a specialized tutor, students use WIN-software only for improvement in three key skill areas: Reading for Information , Applied Mathematics, Locating Information. Progress in these three skill areas has been correlated by data from WIN (Worldwide Interactive Network) to success on the GED Exam. Specifically, a student passing the fifth level of competency in all three of these skill areas is nearly guaranteed to pass the GED exam. This class meets five days per week, two hours per day, and is entirely computer and Internet-based. The intensive GED-Prep class is not covered by AEFLA funding, and costs $350 per 8-week session, or $45 per week. Partial scholarships are available to qualified candidates.
Transition to Campus Programs
Adult Transition Services gives non-traditional students help with the first few steps on pathways leading to better jobs, short-term certificate programs, or two- and four-year degrees. Working in tandem with Learning Support Services and other offices on campus, we ensure that our students receive a full orientation to the benefits and options available to all members of the LCC community, including participation in student life and student activities.
Lamar Community College and the Office of Adult Transition Services do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in its educational programs or activities. Individuals with disabilities should contact the LCC Special Populations Coordinator, Becky Young, at 719.336.1533 for assistance.
