In July of 2009, Lamar Community College hired Michael Wells to become the new Head Women’s Basketball Coach. Coach Wells brings to Lamar a wealth of coaching experience having coached at the NCAA Division I, Division II and Junior College levels.
Most recently, Coach Wells was the head coach at Frank Phillips College in Borger, TX. In four years at FPC, Coach Wells took the Lady Plainsmen from the bottom of the Western Texas Junior College Conference to a regular 20 wins a season program. Compiling a four year record at FPC of 75-46, he became the winning coach in the history of the program. The 2006-07 team recorded the best finish in over 10 years with a record of 21-10, finishing third in the WTJCAC and making the Region V quarterfinals.
Coach Wells had similar success while coaching at Grayson County College in Denison, TX. In a three year span, the Lady Vikings compiled a record of 56-37. Coach Wells left Grayson with the second highest win percentage in program history. After the 2000-01 season, the Lady Vikings made the Region V semi-finals and the Region V quarterfinals in 2002-03.
Other coaching stops for Coach Wells include St. Francis University, Ranger College and Texas A&M University-Commerce. While at St. Francis, he helped lead the Red Flash to the best record in school history of 25-6. St. Francis finished the season with both the Northeast Conference regular season and tournament Championships. The season concluded with an NCAA tournament defeat to Purdue.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Coach Wells earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas A&M University-Commerce. He is married to the former Krystal Bingham, and has four children, Casey, Zachary, Logan and Landry.
