Baseball Heads to "Junction"

(Lamar, Colorado, May 23, 2002) The Lamar Community College Baseball team will continue its season relocating to Grand Junction for the JUCO World Series beginning May 25, 2002. The season extension was made possible by defeating El Paso Community College this weekend in two games (5-4, 14-6) for championship of the Southwestern District title. With these victories, LCC extends its record to 57-3 and continues to have the best record in college baseball. This is the first time that Lamar Community College has attended the JUCO World Series Tournament. It also represents a break in the dry spell for Colorado representation in the Tournament; the last appearance by a Colorado college was in 1994. The Runnin’ Lopes are ranked 13th in the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll.

"We’ve been close to this point for several years now; to finally reach this level is a result of hard work and dedication of players and coaching staff," commented Head Coach Scott Crampton. Coach Crampton has led the Runnin’ Lopes for nine seasons and has a career record of 361 – 166. Previously, he was the Hitting Instructor at New Mexico State University for seven years.

LCC will face the Gulf District champions, Manatee Community College (Bradenton, Florida) (38-18) in the seventh game of the tournament scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
