Student skills assessment

Lamar Community College believes that the assessment of student learning helps to create a positive educational experience for students. The college assesses all student learning at three points: when a student enrolls, as a student completes each course, and as a student prepares to graduate. Below are some details about student assessments.

Basic skills assessment
Lamar Community College believes that students should have good information about their basic skill levels. The college, in compliance with Colorado State Statute, C.R.S. 23-1-113.3, requires that all new students demonstrate their basic skill proficiencies.

New students may not register for classes until they have completed the mandatory assessment and remediation process unless they are exempt from testing.

All students enrolling in degree or certificate programs at LCC will be assessed in the basic skills areas of reading, math, writing, and study skills. Students whose assessments indicate they need assistance with their basic skills will need to engage in appropriate remediation.

Assessment methods
Basic skills assessment can be accomplished using one of the following methods:

ACT /SAT scores
Scores must be received by the College two weeks prior to enrollment and can be no older than two years. Acceptable minimum scores are:

  • English— ACT 18 / SAT 440
  • Reading—ACT 17 / SAT 430
  • Mathematics—ACT 19 / SAT 460

Accuplacer test
The Accuplacer® test is administered by Lamar Community College, as well as at several other Colorado community colleges. Acceptable minimum Accuplacer® scores are:

  • Writing (Sentence skills test) 95
  • Reading 80
  • Mathematics (Elementary Algebra test) 85

Assessment schedule
Lamar Community College provides assessment testing from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Testing also is available by appointment throughout each semester. Please contact the Assessment Coordinator for additional information.

Note: Students wishing to complete assessment prior to arrival at Lamar Community College should contact their local Colorado community college for information concerning assessment availability.

  • Students may take the Reading, English, and Math Accuplacer free one time only per semester.
  • If a student wishes to improve his/her score on any of the exams, there will be a $5.00 retest charge per exam per subject.
  • Students are allowed to take the exam three times in each subject per semester.

Students may be exempt from the assessment process if one of the following conditions is met:

Transfer credit: Students who have completed general education "core" academic course work with a grade of "C" or better at another institution and have official transcripts on file in the LCC Registrar's Office prior to the day of assessment, will be exempt from part or all of basic skills assessment.

Test accommodations: Students with a documented disability may be eligible for test accommodations during the basic skills assessment process. Documentation of the disability must be on file with the Special Populations Coordinator at least one week prior to the day of assessment.

Required remediation
Students determined to need remediation in math, reading, and/or writing are required to enroll in and successfully complete remedial courses. Course descriptions for these courses may be found in the back of the Lamar Community College catalog.
