The Colorado Community College System has entered into a series of agreements between most of Colorado's Community/Junior Colleges and Colorado's four-year colleges and universities on a General Education Core Transfer Program. The agreements ensure access to higher education to Coloradans who wish to meet the lower-division general education requirements of most baccalaureate degrees at a local community/junior college before continuing at a public four-year college or university.
General education addresses the needs of all students, regardless of program area, degree sought, or major, since all people share certain experiences and have certain life goals that are unrelated to any specific discipline of study. The core curriculum is that set of courses that satisfies the general education portion of the requirements for an A.A. or an A.S. degree. All courses with a grade of "C" or above in the core curriculum will transfer to baccalaureate, degree-granting state colleges and universities in Colorado. Students transferring out of state will find, however, that the core courses are usually the introductory courses in discipline areas and will fulfill general education requirements at most four-year institutions across the country. If students know they are planning to transfer out of state, they should obtain a catalog from the institution to which they intend to transfer and then take it to their academic advisor to determine appropriate courses to take to fulfill that institution’s general education requirements.
The offerings within the core curriculum are designed to stimulate students to think deeply, clearly, and logically on the university level about a variety of human questions. These courses help create a balanced, broadly based program that requires students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills; to analyze, synthesize, and communicate information; and to use knowledge and technology intelligently and responsibly.
These core courses are designed to:
- Transfer to baccalaureate degree-granting colleges and universities.
- Expose students to the mainstreams of thought and interpretation in the arts and humanities, sciences, communications, mathematics, and social sciences, and develop students' understanding of the interrelationships among these fields of study.
- Broaden students' interpersonal, intercultural, and international understanding, and develop their perceptions of the evolving nature of society and the interdependence among all peoples.
- Develop students' skills for personal independence through self-understanding, self-expression, numerical calculations and reasoning, and skills for leadership and team activities.
- Increase students' knowledge of the value of physical well being and environment, and help them fulfill their roles as responsible, literate citizens in a free and changing society.
