Innovate & Make Space hosts Grand Opening celebration

The Lamar Community College Innovate & Make Space (I&MS) welcomed guests of all ages to its Grand Opening celebration held Thursday, November 2, in the Betz Technology Center.

With nearly 100 people in attendance, I&MS manager Laura Misenheimer was pleased with the turn out for the event.

“I was glad to see there were so many people interested and excited about our maker space,” she said.  “I know LCC employees have been very enthusiastic about it, but to see people from the community come and be excited, that was really nice.”

Guests of the event were able to explore the space, watch the many machines at work, talk to I&MS volunteers, and even draw for prizes.  The I&MS gave out ten free certification classes, three monthly membership and a wide range of prizes created on the maker space machines.

Over 25 attendees signed up for classes to learn the different machines and create their own items.

Misenheimer also noted that certification classes are now ready.  In order for someone to work independently on the I&MS machines, they must have taken a certification course on that particular piece of equipment.  Classes are $15 each and different machines require a different number of certification classes.
